What to look for in a Server Rack
Choosing the best server rack for you
should be fairly easy
Server Racks, also referred to as data
racks, 19 inch rack, computer racks, server cabinets, network
equipment enclosures or network racks, are used to house
sensitive computer equipment.
Factors involved in choosing a server
rack include:
- Room Size – No
matter what your equipment may require in a rack, it will
not matter if the rack will not fit in your server
room.
- Equipment Size –
Know the depth of the deepest piece computer equipment
that is going into your server rack. The available
space on the inside of your cabinet needs to be at least as
deep as your equipment, plus you will need room for
cables.
- Compatibility –
Make sure the rack you get will accommodate to rack rails
of your equipment. Most often you will choose from
square-holed, round-holed or drilled and tapped vertical
rails. This is where your computer equipment will
mount.
- Ventilation – In
order to keep your server equipment from damage due to
excess heat, it is important that there is adequate airflow
available. Mesh doors, solid side panels and blanking
panels or filler panels are generally
recommended.
- Cable Management
– Server and switch equipment will have cables. The ability
to route cables for easy servicing is essential. Also, keep
in mind that cabling can obstruct air flow through the
rackmount equipment. Keep cables away from the back of
equipment cooling fans for maximum airflow.
- Mobility –
Casters attached to the bottom of the rack will aid in
easily positioning the rack in your facility.
- New or Used –
Sometimes you can find just the right rack and not have to
pay new prices for it. You can find them here: used server
racks.
Server rooms can help to maximize the
air flow with fans, air handlers, blowers, or air conditioning
to maintain the ambient temperature.
